Donor accounts... Where to open them?

Postby joker » Mon Feb 08, 2016 9:27 pm

Reading a thread over at MSE, I thought I would ask on here for advice. The sage YB posted to not use LBG for current account donor purposes. For me I agree with his logic, I don't want to threaten my vantage, rca or CL accounts.

I will soon be opening a new nationwide flex direct though, so was looking for an account to switch. My current thought is Santander I.e. Open a third, normal account there and move it (I have 123s already).

Howevever, if YB, or anyone can offer alternative thoughts that would be great. I have an account with most of the usual suspects but none are spare, so this will be a definitive sacrificial account.

Thoughts?

I just use Lloyds Classic accounts as donors... they don't ask questions and give you the sort/acct no.s there and then, so it's all dead easy - takes a couple of minutes. But I don't have any of those legacy accounts to worry about.

Do you use Halifax for the Rewards account for free fivers?

I only say this because any HBOS account is easy and quick to open once you have accounts with them (as I'm finding out, TSB accounts are relatively quick to generate too).

However, as YB points out the risk is always there that any benefits of the accounts you do run with a given banking group could be rescinded - you have to make up your own mind whether you want to take that risk.

I have been using natwest for myself and GF.
They give you the account details straight away IIRC.
I did open a santander for the same purpose, but never got to use it, so it is still live, with 2 DDs on it.

Now I have Nationwide and Coop, which will be used as donors when i'm ready to start again.

i have quite a lot set up with Tesco Internet Saver and Monmouthshire Building Society.
the latter don't set up new DDs now though, unfortunately.
i have others with small Friendly Society society investments, and with a Credit Union that i'm a member of.
along, of course, with Credit Card payments by Direct Debit :geek:

I use Tesco. The Post Office Online Saver allows DDs too, but I find PO are a right pain to deal with (both for these accounts and CCs). The Tesco accounts allow multiple DDs per account, PO only one per account.
